HIGHLIGHTS
Located in the southern San Juans, the
Weminuche Wilderness is the largest wilderness area in Colorado.
A popular route into the wilderness from Pagosa Springs is Piedra Road. This 20 mile well-maintained gravel road follows
Piedra River and
Williams Creek before reaching
Williams Creek Road, which leads you to the
reservoir.
The nearby Bridge,
Teal, and Cimarrona campgrounds are often considered among the best in Colorado..
In the area, there is an abundance of
aspen and spruce, and a number of hiking trails that lead up into the Weminuche Wilderness.
DIRECTIONS
From Durango, take Highway 160 east 60 miles to Pagosa Springs. Turn left onto Piedra Road and travel north 20 miles. Piedra Road becomes a well-maintained gravel road after the first few paved miles. Turn right onto Williams Creek Road to access the campgrounds, reservoir and trailheads.
