HIGHLIGHTS
Big Cimarron Road is a photographer's dream of aspen and spruce, surrounded by Uncompahgre high peaks in all directions.
On the drive you follow and then cross the Cimarron River as you enter the Uncompahgre National Forest. Along the way, be on the lookout for some of the local
wildlife.
Once inside the national forest, you pass three forest service campgrounds; Big Cimarron,
Beaver Lake, and Silver Jack.
Just beyond the last campground is the turnoff for the overlook. Here you get your first look at
Silver Jack Reservoir. The overlook area also includes several picnic tables, and the trail down to the lake provides access to some of the other trails in the area.
The reservoir is located in an idyllic setting, nestled between those high peaks, with three forks of the Cimarron River profoundly dividing the landscape to the south. To the north the Cimarron River heads out again after its short stay in the lake.
The reservoir is large and scenic, providing a wide array of recreational activities, including great
fishing, motorless
boating, and
hiking trails in all directions.
DIRECTIONS
From Montrose take US 50 east 23 miles to Big Cimarron Road. Turn right, south, and go 20 miles on this well-maintained gravel road.

8,900 feet (Silver Jack Reservoir).
